# File Association Errors: How to Fix PDFs Opening in the Wrong Program

You double-click your PDF expecting it to open in Adobe Reader, but instead, Microsoft Word launches and shows you a garbled mess. Or maybe your web browser intercepts every PDF, even when you specifically want to use a desktop reader.

These are file association errors, and they're surprisingly common. The good news is that file associations are entirely within your control.

## How File Associations Go Wrong

### Installing New Software
When you install a new PDF reader, it often quietly claims the association during installation.

### Windows Updates
Major Windows updates occasionally reset file associations to Microsoft's default applications.

### Corrupted Registry Entries
Windows stores file associations in its registry. Installations and uninstallations can corrupt entries.

### Uninstalling Your PDF Reader
If you uninstall without installing a replacement first, you end up with a broken association.

### Malware
Some malicious software deliberately hijacks file associations.

## Symptoms of File Association Problems

- PDFs open in the wrong application (Notepad, Word, etc.)
- "How do you want to open this file?" appears every time
- PDFs open in browser when you want a desktop reader
- Double-clicking does nothing
- PDF icons are wrong

## Fixing File Associations on Windows 10 and 11

### Method 1: Set Default via File Right-Click
1. Right-click any PDF file
2. Select "Open with" > "Choose another app"
3. Select your preferred PDF reader
4. Check "Always use this app to open .pdf files"
5. Click OK

### Method 2: Set Default via Windows Settings
1. Press Windows key + I
2. Click Apps > Default apps
3. Click "Choose defaults by file type"
4. Find .pdf in the list
5. Select your preferred reader

### Method 3: Set Default from Within Your PDF Reader
**Adobe Reader:** Edit > Preferences > General > "Select Default PDF Handler"
**Foxit Reader:** File > Preferences > File Associations > "Make default PDF viewer"

## Fixing File Associations on Mac

1. Right-click any PDF file
2. Select "Get Info" (Command + I)
3. Expand "Open with" section
4. Select your preferred application
5. Click "Change All..."

## Special Situations

### Browser Claiming PDFs
**Chrome:** Settings > Privacy and Security > Site Settings > PDF documents
**Edge:** Settings > Cookies and site permissions > PDF documents
**Firefox:** Settings > General > Files and Applications
